About

Expedition Blue is a series of installations, or “activators,” throughout Cape Cod and Southern Plymouth County. Different from a traditional kiosk, these structures provide a more substantial presence for gathering, interpreting, engaging the places and people critical to the regional economy. While the activators may use traditional techniques of kiosks, graphics and small attractions, the aim is to extend knowledge into experience through the combination tools (architectural place-making, wayfnding, interactive digital tools) that encourage a deeper experience of the “blue”, water-focused sectors of the economy such as oyster farming, marine robotics, ferry transportation, and more.

When we looked at ways to connect with the region’s martime past while still looking into the future, we researched the historic small structures of Cape Cod as an embodiment of the resourcefulness and resilience that represents the principles of Cape Cod’s current and future water-based economy. The primary inspiration was an early 18th century network of shelters along the coast of Cape Cod, simple 8’x8’x8’ wood shacks, intended as refuges for shipwrecked sailors who made their way to shore.

The wood-clad, open structures and signs, known as waypoints, sharpen the focus, both literally and figuratively, on a significant natural or economic feature at each location. Additionally, the waypoint network offers a wider benefit as a public asset for resting, reading, interpreting, exploring, participating, and ultimately, allowing any visitor to engage with their environment and their economy. Having launched during the pandemic, it also serendipitously serves as a highly accessible, safe, and informative outdoor museum that celebrates the Cape region.

We are also pursuing Living Building Core Certification for this project.
